Engagement Session Tips

February 9, 2021
For those on the fence about doing an engagement session, JUST DO IT. Engagement sessions are often the first time I’m meeting my clients in person and getting to truly work with them. It’s essentially a trial run for your wedding day. We’ll have the opportunity to build our relationship and I’ll be able to gauge you two as a couple. Some couples are quiet + reserved while others are wild + energetic. Ultimately, the more we know each other, the more relaxed you can feel on your wedding day. On top of that, you’ll have photos to reflect back on and to share your love with others. Here are my best tips to ensure an awesome engagement session:

1. Make it a date night! Maybe the thought of getting all dressed up to take photos doesn’t exactly scream excitement, I know I’m the last person who enjoys being in front of the camera. So go get your hair + makeup done professionally, get your nails done, wear outfits that make you feel like a million bucks, and grab a late night dinner after!
2. This tip refers back to tip #1. Have your hair and makeup done professionally. False lashes can really make your eyes pop! Beautifully done makeup can help create a smooth skin tones. Consider setting up your hair + makeup trial for the day of your engagement session! Also, your nails will likely be in some shots, so get them done, or paint them yourself a nice neutral color. If you’re confident in your hair + makeup skills, skip this tip!

3. Narrow down your outfits to 2-3 outfits. Bring 1 dressy outfit and 1-2 casual outfits. AVOID matchy-matchy outfits and bright/neon colors. Maybe I’m a little biased as my closet is full of neutral colors; however, keeping your outfit choices neutral and toned down creates more timeless photos. Think about what the photos will look like hung on your wall one day. Most importantly, don’t forget to wear something you are comfortable in and if you’re up for an adventure, don’t wear something you wouldn’t mind getting a little dirty! 4. We’ll typically have up to an hour for your engagement session. We can go to as many locations as that hour allows. Usually my clients narrow it down to 1 solid location or 2 simple ones within reasonable distance of another. I’m more than happy to give location recommendations if you let me know what you’re looking for in your engagement session. Are you looking for a beachy, woodsy, or urban vibes? Let me know!

5. Pack a cooler + bring your favorite drinks to help you let loose! If you aren’t one to enjoy a drink, I still recommend bringing a bottle of champagne as it can be fun to pop at the end of the session! I often have some music playing in the background to help ease any tensions!

6. Keep your evening of the session free! I photograph engagement sessions 1-1.5 hours before sunset. If it’s a cloudy day or weather isn’t permitting, the session time may need to be adjusted to earlier in the evening. If the weather ends up causing us to reschedule completely, we will do so. If it’s just a light rain, consider embracing it! Grab a clear umbrella, let’s go to the beach for a steamy session, or stay inside at a cute little coffee shop!

7. Bring extra clothes/shoes if we are doing any sort of hiking, crossing muddy areas, or trekking through deep snow.

8. Bring a blanket! Blankets are a good prop for cozying up with another, keeping you warm, and allows us to have a barrier when sitting on the ground!
9. So when should you book your engagement session? You’ll receive your engagement session gallery within 1-2 weeks of your session which is something to consider if you’ll be using these images for your save the dates or invites. I find most clients book their engagement session around 8-12 months prior to their wedding. With that said, I’ve also had clients book their engagement session less than a month prior. You’ll want to consider the type of weather and season. I prefer summer sessions–nothing beats a warm, summer night in Michigan!
10. Are you super shy and awkward? EVERY couple says this. But I have a secret! The way you look or how comfortable you feel in front of the camera has nothing to do with how the photos I take of you will look. Don’t worry, I will give you guidance with some minimal posing. I’ll then give you some special cues to help capture those candid moments you strive for! I got you and YOU got this! If you’re unsure, take it from a previous client below:
“Morgan did our engagement shoot and I couldn’t be happier! She was so helpful through the entire process. She even helped us with picking a location and gave us helpful tips before the shoot. During the shoot she was very hands on, telling us exactly what to do which made us both feel very relaxed. The pictures were beautiful. She was excellent. 11/10!”
